After turned the bightness up I had literally no problems with darkness except in bits here and there. Predator film is that it was just that- the aliens fighting the predators. It is a perfect movie, it is clearly recommended.
NOT! Buy AVP on it's own, don't bother with AVP2 (Requiem).
My only regret is that there aren't more. When I finally did receive it, I went to play it in a region-compatible player, but the dvd didn't play at all.

Since amazon seems to be mixing the reviews between formats and versions of the films, let me start by saying that I'm writing about the AVP/AVPR-unrated 2 disc "double feature" DVD set. The Director's Cut of Alien is an alternate version of the 1979 film, released theatrically in 2003. This is the one for you. on the back of the individual case for AVP it says its the PG-13 rated 101 minute theatrical version...THAT IS JUST A MISPRINT...once you put the disk in it gives you the option for both theatrical or 108 minute unrated version...so if you bought it and freaked out like I did about thinking the item was incorrect..dont worry about it its fine. And since it took over a month to initially receive the dvd, I didn't have the time left to return it for a refund -- no compromise for the late shipping. All I heard was the dvd spinning in the player until I ejected it. Contrary to the vast majority of so-called "director's cuts", it is actually a shortened version of the movie, decreasing the run time by around a minute. DOES. Thought this film in DVD was awful, far too dark on my old tv. I remember first watching it thinking it was terrible, jaw droppingly bad, the terrible soap opera script, bad lighting, underwhelming fight scenes, poor acting, the lot. She caught a snippet of AvP on TV. The lighting is too dark, I had a hard time seeing the night time and underground scenes.
At last the mighty predators vs the vicious aliens, a great battle for survival and supremacy will begin... Well not exactly, the first film is pretty decent with a plausible plot line and even if it didn't make sense the thrill of a predator and an slien in the same scene would be enough to keep our excitement levels high. Predator: Requiem is an extended version of the 2007 film, first released on home video in 2008. Word of warning to anyone intending to purchase the Region B edition of the AvP 1 & 2 Double Pack under the misconception -as I was, that it contains the 'unrated' edition of AVP-R.
The unrated parts really do add to the films and are quite graphic so if you are a bit squeamish then perhaps stay away.
