Built upon the id Tech 7 engine, visuals are excellent, and graphics performance is outstanding. For example, 6GB cards can’t use the next higher preset ‘Nightmare’, at resolutions above 1080p.
Complex shadows, lighting, and reflections often matter very little visually but can tank performance. Going from low to medium only drops performance on most cards by around 5%, and even the jump from low to ultra only drops performance about 20%. Sure, top performance will come with higher clocks and more cores or threads, at least up to a certain point. The RX 5500 XT 8GB consistently beats the R9 390 and RX 570 cards, showing the improvements made in AMD's RDNA architecture. Future US, Inc. 11 West 42nd Street, 15th Floor, I just need to spend my money on a good GPU.

There's a good degree of customization along with half a dozen presets and for testing today we'll be using the third highest option labeled "Ultra," but with resolution scaling set to off. id makes another game that runs well on almost anythingWell, the fact that we already suspected as much doesn’t make it any less true: Doom Eternal runs really well, and on pretty much every resolution, too.
It's definitely playable, and with a few tweaks like resolution scaling (see our running As far as image quality goes, it's also surprising how good VRAM isn't just about what settings you can run either: Look at the 1080p medium chart, near the bottom, and contrast that with the 1080p low chart.

It’s difficult to know if Nvidia isn't performing some trickery at the driver level, the difference between AMD and Nvidia performance with 6GB of VRAM seems too extreme. When it comes to preset scaling we see once again that the Ultra, Nightmare and Ultra Nightmare settings are all very similar in terms of performance, as long as you have 8GB or more VRAM available. Because Doom Eternal has no built-in benchmark, we splatted demons in one of the starting levels, doing each run in as consistent of a manner as …
I think maybe the fact that he's not showing results for nightmare and nightmare ultra might could be VRAM related, but I don't think the poor performance in the other presets has anything to do with that. NY 10036.
Whilst you may not be able to reach those Ultra settings due to the lower VRAM available, getting 80+fps on high at 1080p is such a relief and DOOM Eternal plays and looks great regardless on the GTX 970. Here we see the 8GB 5500 XT averaging 91fps, the same level of performance also seen from the RX 580 and 590.
