The novel's thematic mix of God-playing, life, death, and science are present, flowing from a script that follows the narrative path of that novel and never strays too far from it: Victor Frankenstein makes a monster out of the parts of dead men and pays the price. The scene where Frankenstein and the Creature talk in a cave always lefts me mesmerized, its so well written and acted (especially by De Niro), being the pivotal scene in the movie.
Pretty lit Sunday evening viewing, all told.But dear christ, Ken Bran fancies himself, doesn't he?Tries to make gothic horror into melodrama, doesn’t work. The film boils over with gothic passions and a lack of subtly, but it is, nonetheless, engaging.Branagh's presentation of Shelley's classic work blends fully-rendered cinematic production design and theatrical style into the gothic tale. Supposedly, cause I've only read the first 110 pages. Alas, none of these aspects are able to shine through in this tonally jumbled and silly mess of a film.I'm really amazed so much went wrong here. Looking good Kenneth!I absolutely adore Branagh, and while this film is pretty atrocious from a writing/acting perspective, I just can't help but enjoy every second of it. Every line is shouted, every shot the camera is spinning in circles around the actors. I enjoyed the actors shouting the source material at me, the $$$ production design, and Kenneth Branagh’s consistent shirtlessness. This had so much potential, but the whole thing is just i get that this is objectively... mediocre ... but for some reason it worked and i was actually really invested throughoutIt actually took me a hour after the movie ended to figure out if I liked this movie or not. It is probably the closest movie to Mary Shelly's novel out there....I could be mistaken as their are countless versions of her book.In this one Kenneth Branagh plays Dr. Frankenstein and Robert DeNiro plays the monster. The book started to get a bit dull but that's nothing compared to this movie!
